WHAT'S THE ISSUE?

Respecting People With Different Cultural Backgrounds

There are seven-point eight billion people in this world. There are 7,099 languages. There are 195 countries. And there are countless religions.

America is a country that is home to many different people, each with their own story. We all have family from various places across the globe. That is why it is so important to respect people who are different from us. Unfortunately, a lot of immigrant and refugee families are not treated with this basic respect. Here are a few ways that you can help others feel more appreciated.

One of the most valuable ways you can help is by being educated. It is ideal to know where people come from and a bit about their culture. If you have a friend, neighbor, family member, etc. who is from a different country, then learn about that specific country! They would feel so nice to know that someone else knows more about where they are originally from. It is great to keep a world map around so that you can get an idea of where certain countries are located. It is also a good idea to learn about holidays, languages, other customs used in different countries.

If you see that someone is struggling, help them out! This could look different depending on what is happening. However, some examples would be helping someone who is being discriminated against, someone who is having trouble communicating their needs, or seems like they are generally confused or alone. Be sure to be patient and understanding, as they may be feeling very overwhelmed or embarrassed. Remember that they are people who have their own thoughts and feelings. Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai is one of many beautiful novels that gives insight on the perspective of someone who moved to a new and completely different country. It is humorous and thought-provoking and we highly recommend that you take some time to read this book!

Though talking to someone who seems so different from you can be intimidating, just know that you might surprise yourself with just how powerful being kind can really be!

EMPOWERING ACTIVITY

Give Yourself a Gift

Making or buying someone a gift can feel so pleasant, so why not give yourself a gift? It does not need to be for a special occasion or holiday. Just give something to yourself as a reward for continuing to live on as your best self! You can make yourself some beautiful new room decor or buy yourself a useful gadget. The sky's the limit! This activity can help you realize that you are worth celebrating! You do not need someone else to tell you if you have been doing a good job, that is something you can decide for yourself!

COLOR OF THE MONTH

The color of the month is white. I decided to pair it with black.

CRAFT

Trash to Treasure

Look around your house; you're sure to find lots of different materials for this craft! We often throw things away without second-guessing it. However, you can create functional, decorative, or fun new treasure from trash. You could try to recreate the craft below or, you could try making your very own crafts by using your imagination to build them!

Materials

  1. An old broken clock

  2. Scrap paper

  3. Scissors

  4. Glue stick

  5. Hot glue gun

  6. Screwdriver

Step 1

Carefully remove the clock print and hands. If you need an adult to help you with this then be sure to ask one.

Step 2

Create paper flowers to put inside the frame. You can do this by folding the paper and cutting out a petal shape. Then, simply glue the petals into a flower. Make sure to keep the used side of the paper face down if possible. You can finely cut the scraps to create confetti to fill up space.

Step 3

Cut out a circle that fits into the frame and glue the flowers onto it. If you would like, you could glue the art into the frame to firmly secure it. Put the glazing back into place and hang your beautiful new decor! We can't wait to see your own trash to treasure transformations! You can send us a picture at sandazine@gmail.com!

DRAWING PROMPT

Draw Your Dream Room!

You can draw one wall or the entire room. Fill it up with cool room decor, plants, and furniture. It also helps to come up with a general color pallet and theme. I used cool colors to create a luxurious night sky theme! You can look up inspiration online or in a magazine. Have fun drawing and be sure to send us a picture at sandazine@gmail.com!

5 Ways You Can Be Kind Today

Kindness makes things better. One nice thing could make someone's day. It helps both sides feel good and accomplished. Kindness can come in many forms: you can be kind to others, yourself, or even the environment! But we're sure that you already know this, so let's get right to our list!

Make someone a special treat

It can be a snack or a meal, simple or elaborate, a new or old recipe. Either way, the person you are taking time for will surely appreciate your work! Nothing's better than sharing something delicious with a friend!

Take some time to ask someone about how they are feeling

Sometimes having someone to talk to can make a world of difference. Just knowing that you have people who you can lean back on makes your problems a little less daunting. So why not help a friend feel supported? Take some time out of your day to call a friend to check up on them and maybe even give them some advice!

Finish something that you started

Everyone has a goal or project that they never were able to finish. So make today the day that you start working on it! Being able to come back to your old ideas might inspire you to come up with more! While you work, you can think about what your life was like at the time that you started your project. What has improved? What hasn't? How have you grown since then? Working on old things can bring you back and lift a weight off your shoulders!

Do something for your community

Although during a pandemic some options may be limited, there are still plenty of things you can do! You could help donate supplies to animal shelters, help deliver groceries for people who are at high risk, or pick up trash at a park. There will always be something you can do to help!

Write someone a thank you letter

This might seem like a cheesy idea, but it really will make someone happy! Just imagine how nice it would feel to receive a thank you note, so let's make someone's day just that better! If you can read your letter out loud to someone, that would be ideal. If you cannot tell someone in person, then record yourself reading it and text it to your friend. Be sure to include specific details and memories in your letter to make it more personal. Tell your friend how much they mean to you. A personalized thank you letter is sure to be a lovely surprise!

RECIPE

Grilled Chocolate Raspberry Sandwiches

Though this may seem like a bit of an odd recipe, it has a truly delightful taste! Sweet sandwiches can be just as good as savory ones. The crispy crust from the bread and melted chocolate raspberry filling are sure to have you craving more!

Ingredients

  1. 2 slices of the bread of your choice (I am using honey wheat)

  2. 1 tbsp chocolate chips

  3. About 10 raspberries (Feel free to use other fruits if you'd like!)

  4. 1 tbsp yogurt

  5. Coconut oil

Directions

  1. In a small bowl, mash up your raspberries with a fork. If you want to put in whole raspberries or use jam instead, you can skip this step.

  2. Spread some coconut oil onto your pan and cook the slices of bread so that they develop a nice golden crust on one side.

  3. While the bread is toasting, spread on the yogurt, then raspberry puree, and finally the chocolate chips.

  4. Then put the other piece of toast on top and cook until the inside is melted. Enjoy!
